you enjoy a welcome dinner party tonight.
Day 7 ULAAN BATAAR to HOGNO HAN
Visit Gandan Monastery, the seat of Buddhism in Mongolia. Strolling
through the monastery grounds, you will hear the low hums of the
horns used to call the lamas to the temple, observe their daily
ritual and reading of the sutras (teachings of Buddha). Tour the
Chenrezi and Kalachakra Temples, and Migjid Janraisig, gilded in
gold and clothed with silk and precious stones. Drive to Hogno Han,
a ger camp. Visit a nomadic horse-breeder family. While in the countryside,
you will overnight in gers, the traditional felt tents of nomadic
herders. The gers provide an authentic and memorable taste of Mongolia.
Day 8 HOGNO HAN to KHARAKHORUM
Drive to Kharakhorum, site of the 13th century capital of the Mongol
Empire. The great Chingis Khan created this beautiful and legendary
city to serve as the heart of his monolithic empire. Mongolia's
largest monastery, Erdene Zuu, was reputedly constructed from the
ruins of Kharakhorum in the 16th century. Explore the monastery's
grounds, and observe the monks in their daily rituals and prayers.
Later in the afternoon, visit Shankh Hiid, once frequented by the
renowned Buddhist artist and sculptor, Zanabazar. Tonight, overnight
at a ger camp.
Day 9 KHARAKHORUM to ULAAN BATAAR
Drive back to Ulaan Bataar, enjoying visits with families and a
picnic lunch in the countryside along the way. In the evening, sample
traditional Mongolian dishes while dining in a large ger, similar
to the one owned by Chingis Khan. Check in to the Ulaan Bataar Hotel.
Day 10 ULAAN BATAAR to GOBI DESERT
This morning, fly over vast steppe land to the semi-arid desert
of the Gobi. Upon arrival, drive to Moltsog Els, one of the few
regions covered by sand dunes and stop to visit a camel-breeder
family. Overnight at a ger camp.
Day 11 GOBI DESERT
After breakfast, travel to the legendary "Flaming Cliffs,"
named for its glowing orange rock. The first nest of dinosaur eggs
was discovered here in 1922. Although not obvious to the untrained
eye, the red sandstone cliffs of the Flaming Cliffs are rich with
dinosaur fossils and paleontological expeditions continue to make
significant finds at this site. Return to the ger camp for dinner
and overnight stay.
Day 12 GOBI DESERT
This morning, drive to Yol Valley National Park, cradled between
the foothills of the Altai Mountains. An ancient river carved this
surprisingly green valley. A hike through the valley allows you
to discover habitat for indigenous vulture-like lammergeiers, Altai
snowcocks, ibex, yaks, and Argali mountain sheep. Enjoy a picnic
lunch including a traditional Mongolian barbecue (horhog) before
visiting the local natural history museum for an overview of the
flora and fauna of the area. Return to the ger camp for dinner and
overnight.
Day 13 GOBI DESERT to ULAAN BATAAR

Bataar Hotel. This afternoon, visit a cashmere factory. In the evening,

(throat) singing followed by dinner at the Seoul Hotel.
